A 53-year-old Lagos resident, Nelly Monday, has been sentenced to one month in prison for illegally dumping waste into a public drainage channel during a downpour.
Monday was arrested in the Meiran area on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, after she was caught disposing of trash into the gutters during a rainstorm.
She was subsequently arraigned before the Lagos State Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty to the environmental offence. Following her plea, the presiding magistrate sentenced her to one month imprisonment without an option of fine.
LAWMA, in a statement released, warned residents against indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly dumping refuse in drainage channels and other unauthorised locations as such acts are environmental offences that attract sanctions under the law. It urged residents to dispose of their waste responsibly and through approved channels.
The Authority says it will continue to work with relevant enforcement agencies to identify and sanction environmental offenders across Lagos.
