An Hausa lady, Ramlah Hukuma, has questioned the longstanding Hausa marital tradition that requires a bride to furnish the entire house she and her husband will live in.
Ramlah, who stated this in a Facebook post on Wednesday, said she won’t participate in the tradition.
“As a Hausa girl, one tradition in our marriage culture I honestly don’t understand is why a woman is expected to furnish the entire house she and her husband will live in, from kitchen appliances to mattresses, beddings and everything,” she wrote.
“The woman and her family are expected to provide everything for the house while the man only provides an empty apartment and some clothes for her to wear.
“Where exactly does the Quran make this a woman’s responsibility. Personally, I don’t see myself participating in this tradition. I cannot imagine my parents buying a bed for a man so he can have somewhere to sleep in his own home.”
