Newsypeople – Google has initiated a round of layoffs, affecting approximately 200 members of its core team based in California. As part of this restructuring, some positions are being relocated to India and Mexico, reflecting a trend among Silicon Valley tech companies to reduce their workforce. The core teams at Google are integral to the development of the company’s flagship products and play a crucial role in ensuring user online safety.

Vice President of Google Developer Ecosystem, Asim Husain, communicated this change to the staff, emphasizing that the relocation of positions is aimed at enhancing Google’s proximity to its partners and developer communities. Husain highlighted the significance of emerging markets in India and Brazil in this context. He acknowledged that such announcements might cause uncertainty or frustration among employees but reassured them that these changes are aligned with Google’s broader objectives.

The Core Systems & Experience division within Google is responsible for establishing the technical foundation for Google’s flagship products, safeguarding user online safety, and managing its global IT infrastructure. This division’s importance underscores the impact of the layoffs on Google’s operational capabilities.

Earlier in January, Google had already begun a process of staff reductions in the digital assistant and hardware departments, with CEO Sundar Pichai indicating that further cuts could be imminent. Despite these layoffs, Google’s parent company, Alphabet, reported a 60% increase in profits for the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period last year.

The tech industry’s hiring boom during the COVID-19 pandemic, driven by increased online activity and spending, has led to a significant expansion of big tech companies. However, as growth slows, these companies are now focusing on cost-cutting measures. Apple, for instance, had maintained a relatively stable workforce until recently, but the trend of layoffs is becoming more widespread across the industry.

In addition to Google, other major tech companies have also announced layoffs. Amazon has initiated a new round of layoffs at its cloud computing business, AWS, following similar actions by Electronic Arts, Sony, Cisco Systems, and Snap. These moves reflect a broader industry trend towards restructuring and cost optimization.
