“Freshly squeezed orange juice was not fit for human consumption” — Osinbajo shares wife’s shocking experience

?Freshly squeezed orange juice was not fit for human consumption? ? Osinbajo shares wife?s shocking experience

Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has shared how his wife, Dolapo, once discovered that the freshly squeezed orange juice she drank regularly was reportedly unsafe for human consumption.

Osinbajo shared the story while speaking at the Open Day for Gardeners’ Seminar themed “Leaving the Earth Better Than We Found It” in Lagos on August 28, 2026.

According to him, Dolapo had developed strange headaches every few days despite maintaining what she considered a healthy lifestyle, including drinking a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice daily.

After checking her diet without finding an explanation, she reportedly sent a batch of the orange juice to a laboratory for testing.

Osinbajo said the test result showed that the juice was “not fit for human consumption.”

He explained that the discovery raised concerns about the chemicals used by some farmers and traders to ripen or preserve fruits and vegetables.

He cited studies and surveys which he said found that some fruit sellers admitted using substances including calcium carbide and other toxic chemicals on produce.

Osinbajo warned Nigerians not to assume that food is safe simply because it looks fresh or a drink is natural.

“The fact that fruit looks fresh doesn’t mean that it is safe,” he said.

He called for stronger regulation and enforcement, while urging farmers and traders to adopt safer practices and consumers to ask questions, properly wash produce and report suspicious practices.

He also stressed that Nigerians have a role to play in their communities by speaking up and pushing for safer food practices.
