David passed away on January 14, 2023, and since then, his family has received several tributes and condolences.

It is with great grief that I have learned of the death of the Honorable David C. Onley, said Lt.-Gov. Elizabeth Dowdeswell in a statement. She then sent her sincere sympathies to his wife, kids, and other family members.

Onley “worked tirelessly to promote public awareness about accessibility concerns, urging people to recognize the ability, rather than the impairment,” Premier Doug Ford wrote.

He commended Onley for his support of the Indigenous people of Ontario, his contributions to the state, and his dedication to public service.

Ford continued by saying that on behalf of all Ontarians, he wanted to give his wife Ruth Ann and the entire Onley family his thoughts and prayers.

John Tory, the mayor of Toronto, also sent his condolences to Onley’s friends, family, and coworkers.

His “history of supporting handicap concerns and advocating for accessibility for everyone” was also acknowledged as a source of gratitude.

 

David Onley Family Background Explored

David Charles Onley was born in Midland, Ontario, Canada, and raised in Scarborough’s West Hill on Orchard Park Drive.

Onley studied political science at the University of Toronto Scarborough, where he served as student council president and graduated with honors.

He had polio when he was three years old, which caused partial paralysis. However, considerable physical therapy assisted him in regaining use of his arms and hands, as well as some use of his legs.

Onley could walk with leg braces, canes, or crutches, but he preferred to travel by electric scooter. He could drive a car and use hand controls to accelerate and brake.

Following his childhood polio experience, Onley was diagnosed with a brain tumor in late 2019, which was successfully removed.

Only Albert Edward Matthews (1937-1946) and Elizabeth Dowdeswell (2014-present) have served lengthier terms.

Onley died at the age of 72, having been born on June 12, 1950. His official cause of death has not been disclosed.
