A 25-year-old man has been Cortavius Thompson charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of a 1-month-old baby who was in his care while the baby’s mother, a relative, was at work.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, Cortavius Thompson has been charged with first-degree murder while abusing children.
A Tampa hospital reportedly called the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office on December 8 to report an unresponsive infant who had been brought to the emergency room with upper body damage. The infant passed away the next morning.
According to investigators, the mother took the child to the hospital after discovering the injuries when she got home from work, according to WTSP. She added that she would return home for lunch and that there were no visible wounds then.
According to Thompson, the baby was sobbing in another room while he was in the bathroom. When he took up the infant to check on it, he “noticed many symptoms of trauma.”
According to the Times, Thompson claimed that as he waited for the mother to come, he “put the infant in the bathtub in an attempt to wake the kid.”
The child’s injuries were not described by the sheriff’s office, but the medical examiner’s office found that they could not have been caused by accident and classified the death as a homicide. Thompson is being held without bond at the Falkenburg Road Jail.
