A Nigerian lady has raised concerns about the need for people to properly inspect houses before paying rent after her neighbour’s bedroom floor reportedly collapsed, revealing a soakaway directly underneath.
According to the lady, she heard a loud noise around 1 a.m. but initially assumed it was caused by cats around the compound.
She said residents later discovered that part of her neighbour’s house had been built directly over a soakaway, causing the floor to collapse.
She claimed several belongings, including a phone, fell into the soakaway during the incident.
The lady criticised the landlord, questioning how the property could have been constructed over a soakaway without proper structural reinforcement.
She also accused the landlord of prioritising rent collection over the safety of tenants, saying landlords should properly invest in their properties before putting them out for rent.
The incident prompted her to advise prospective tenants to inspect properties properly and look beyond the appearance of a building before paying rent.
“Check your house properly before paying rent,” she advised.
