Aston Villa have announced plans to take legal action against Jamie Carragher over comments the club described as “unacceptable insults” towards the team and its supporters. The dispute follows remarks on the Stick to Football podcast, where the former Liverpool defender discussed speculation linking Villa manager Unai Emery with Manchester United.
Carragher suggested that Emery might welcome another opportunity to manage one of football’s biggest clubs if Michael Carrick’s position at Old Trafford became available. His comments prompted criticism from Villa supporters, to whom he responded during the podcast by saying there was a hierarchy in football. “I’m not trying to annoy Villa fans but there is a chain in football, whether you like it or not,” Carragher said.
“So Real Madrid will take Man United’s best player, they’ll take Ronaldo. There’s very few above United, the same with Liverpool.” He argued that Villa also benefited from their position relative to other clubs by recruiting their players and managers.
Carragher then told Villa supporters to “shut the f*** up” and said: “Aston Villa will never be Manchester United.” In a statement published on the club’s social media accounts on Friday, chairman Nassef Sawiris announced that Villa intended to respond through legal action.
“Aston Villa will initiate legal action against Jamie Carragher for his unacceptable insults about the club and its fans,” he said. “Aston Villa will not allow anyone to stop our ascension in English and European football.” The club did not specify the legal basis for its proposed action and did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for further comment.
Carragher also did not immediately respond to the news agency’s request for comment. However, he addressed the controversy on social media, saying his remarks had been intended as a joke. “It was a joke after the stick Villa fans have given me over saying Emery may fancy joining Man Utd,” he wrote.
Carragher said clips circulating online should also reflect his longstanding praise for Emery and Villa, including his support for their Europa League victory in Istanbul. He reiterated that his suggestion about Manchester United reflected his admiration for Emery, whom he considers one of the Premier League’s best managers, rather than criticism of Villa.
The debate comes amid pressure on Carrick following Manchester United’s poor start to the season. Emery has overseen a significant improvement in Villa’s fortunes since taking charge four years ago, leading the club into the Champions League twice. He also ended their 30-year wait for silverware by winning the Europa League last season.
However, Villa have undergone substantial squad changes since that success. Six players who started the Europa League final departed during the transfer window, with the report citing higher wages and opportunities to compete more regularly for trophies among their reasons for leaving.
Before joining Villa, Emery enjoyed success with Valencia and Sevilla and also managed Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal. “Surely he would want that opportunity to manage a giant again,” Carragher said during the podcast discussion.
