After a Spanish judge mandated that the singer face trial for tax evasion, Shakira’s fight with the Spanish tax authorities has continued. This court order cannot be appealed by her.
Shakira will stand trial for six tax offenses stemming from her alleged failure to pay wealth and personal income taxes between 2012 and 2014.
The 45-year-old is being charged with six tax offenses, and the prosecution is requesting eight years and two months in prison and a fine of €23.8 million after the singer ended talks to reach a settlement, according to sources from Spain.
The €14.5 million that was fraudulently obtained through various tax havens has already been reimbursed by the ex-partner of Barcelona’s Gerard Piqué.
According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the singer evaded paying wealth tax and personal income tax between 2012 and 2014 even though she was aware that she was required to do so in Spain, where she spends more than half the year in her home in Esplugues de Llobregat (Barcelona).
Shakira was a tax resident in Spain in 2012, 2013 and 2014, according to the prosecutor’s office, because she spent more than 183 days there each year.
She only traveled outside of Spain once, to work as a judge on “The Voice” in the US (61 days in 2012, 118 in 2013 and 117 in 2014).
