King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom, who became the world’s youngest reigning monarch after ascending the throne at just three years old, has died at the age of 34.
The death of the Tooro monarch was confirmed by the Prime Minister of the Tooro Kingdom on Thursday night, drawing attention to the extraordinary life of a ruler who spent more than three decades on the throne.
King Oyo became Omukama (King) of Tooro in 1995 following the death of his father. His accession made him one of the youngest monarchs in modern history and attracted international attention.
King Oyo’s extraordinary reign
Despite becoming king as a toddler, King Oyo remained the cultural and traditional head of Tooro Kingdom as he grew into adulthood and took on greater responsibilities.
His reign spanned more than 30 years, during which he became an important figure in Uganda’s traditional and cultural landscape.
At the time of his death, the monarch had not officially married. His unusual journey from childhood monarch to an adult traditional ruler remained one of the most remarkable aspects of his life.
The cause of King Oyo’s death had not been disclosed when his passing was announced.
