Shawn’s “knee simply wasn’t having it” back in 2012, she told WBUR, despite her best efforts to recover in time for the Olympics after undergoing surgery. Johnson, who had already undergone two knee surgeries and required a third, acknowledged in an interview that it wasn’t just her knee that was keeping her from moving forward.
Even though she planned to continue participating, she quit gymnastics prior to the Olympic Trials for the 2012 Games.
