Olivia Munn Freezes Embryos with John Mulaney Amid Cancer Treatment and Hysterectomy
Olivia Munn, the actress known for her roles in films like “X-Men: Apocalypse” and TV shows like “The Newsroom,” has been publicly sharing her personal journey through breast cancer treatment, including significant decisions about her reproductive health. Diagnosed with luminal B breast cancer in both breasts in April 2023, Munn embarked on a series of surgeries and treatments that have significantly impacted her life and plans for the future.
Munn’s cancer journey began with a genetic test that initially showed no signs of the breast cancer gene, along with clear mammograms and an ultrasound. However, her OB-GYN calculated her breast cancer risk assessment score at 37%, leading to the discovery of masses. Following her diagnosis, Munn underwent four surgeries within ten months, including a full double mastectomy, a lymph node dissection, reconstructive surgery, and a nipple delay. These procedures were part of her comprehensive treatment plan to combat the cancer.
Amid her cancer treatment, Munn and her partner, comedian John Mulaney, made the decision to freeze her eggs. This decision was driven by their desire to potentially expand their family in the future, despite the challenges posed by Munn’s cancer treatment. Munn had previously frozen her eggs at ages 33 and 39, and the decision to freeze again was influenced by her diagnosis and the potential impact of chemotherapy or radiation on her fertility. Despite the risks associated with hormone therapy for egg retrieval, Munn and Mulaney decided to proceed, hoping for a successful outcome.
The latest round of egg retrieval was particularly successful, with Munn and Mulaney receiving the news that they had two healthy embryos. This development was both exciting and relieving for them, as it meant they could explore the possibility of building their family through a surrogate, should Munn’s ability to carry a child be compromised due to her cancer treatment.
Munn’s decision to undergo a hysterectomy was another significant step in her cancer treatment and reproductive planning. She chose to have her uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries removed to ensure her body no longer produced estrogen, a crucial aspect of managing her type of breast cancer. This decision was not taken lightly, as it meant she would no longer menstruate and could not carry a child naturally. However, Munn emphasized that this was the best decision for her, allowing her to be present for her family, including her 2-year-old son, Malcolm.
John Mulaney Supported Olivia Munn During Her Cancer Treatment
John Mulaney has been a constant source of support for Olivia Munn as she battles breast cancer. Munn revealed in March 2024 that she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer in April 2023 and has undergone a double mastectomy and other surgeries over the past year.
Mulaney has been by Munn’s side throughout her health journey. He has researched her medical procedures and side effects, been present before and after her surgeries, and placed framed photos of their son Malcolm in her hospital room so it would be the first thing she saw when she woke up.
Munn credits Mulaney for being an incredibly hands-on father to their 2-year-old son while also supporting her through her cancer treatment. He has juggled taking Malcolm to the park, putting him down for naps, driving Munn to the hospital, and being there for her, all while staying positive.
“It would’ve felt like climbing an iceberg without him,” Munn said of Mulaney’s support. “I don’t think he had a moment to himself, between being an incredibly hands-on father and going to and from the hospital.”
Munn also shared that Malcolm has been a source of joy during this difficult time, helping put things into perspective.
