Dele Odule says western culture can’t stop African men from having many wives

Veteran Nollywood actor, Dele Odule, has said that Western values cannot erase Africa’s traditional acceptance of polygamy, stressing that being responsible is more important than conforming to foreign standards.

The actor made the remark while reflecting on rumours about his personal life and social media controversies.

He said people often misinterpret his motivational posts, turning them into gossip for clout. “At a time, people claimed I had 10 children with 10 women. I simply agreed; after all, it’s not a crime in Nigeria. If it’s a sin, I’ll face it when I get to heaven,” he said.

Odule noted that as long as a man is disciplined and can take care of his household, there is nothing wrong with having multiple wives. “Polygamy is part of African culture. Western culture says one man, one wife, but we are Africans. The key is being responsible and disciplined,” he added.

Balancing fame, family, and discipline

Speaking on his journey in the movie industry, the actor explained that fame often comes with challenges, especially in a social media-driven world where people twist stories for attention.

However, he emphasised that staying focused and upright has helped him maintain a clean image.

I have learnt not to talk too much or argue unnecessarily. If what’s being said doesn’t harm my career, I simply say, ‘I’ve heard you.’ As long as I’m not accused of any crime, I don’t take things to heart,” he stated.

Odule revealed that family plays a vital role in keeping him grounded. At home, he said, he is not a star but a husband and father who strives to give at least 70 per cent of his time and effort to his loved ones.

Consistency, discipline, and self-discovery are what keep me grounded. Once you know who you are, you can overcome any challenge,” he said.

Advice to young actors: ‘chase mastery, not fame’

Dele Odule also had words of advice for aspiring actors entering the entertainment industry.

He cautioned that fame can easily lead to distractions if one is not disciplined or patient. “If you’re coming into entertainment, be very careful. Some people get into trouble not because they planned to, but because they got carried away,” he warned.

He advised young entertainers to focus on building skill and professionalism rather than seeking fame or money at all costs. “Don’t chase fame or money; chase mastery. Perfect your craft first; the fame and money will follow,” he said.

The actor, who studied Mass Communication later in life to expand his knowledge, said his passion for acting remains unshaken. “Acting has always been my calling. I went back to school not to change careers but to improve myself. Education complements experience,” he added.
