Danish midfielder, Christian Eriksen collapsed for the second time in his career during Denmark’s international friendly against Ukraine in Odense.
This a chilling recurrence of the medical emergency that shocked football world during Euro 2020.
The 34-year-old midfielder, who famously survived a cardiac arrest on the pitch against Finland five years ago, was rushed for medical attention after suddenly falling to the ground during the second half of the match.
Thankfully, Eriksen regained consciousness and was able to leave the pitch under his own power, but the incident has reignited difficult questions about whether one of Denmark’s greatest-ever footballers should continue playing professionally.
How the Incident Happened
The friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine was being played at Nature Energy Park in Odense when disaster struck in the 65th minute.
Witnesses reported that Eriksen appeared to grab his chest before collapsing to the turf.
Norwegian referee, Sigurd Smehus Kringstad immediately halted play as medical staff rushed onto the pitch.
As panic spread around the stadium, both Danish and Ukrainian players quickly formed a protective ring around Eriksen while he received treatment.
A hush descended over the crowd before supporters began chanting:
“Eriksen, Eriksen.”
The match remained suspended before eventually being abandoned in the 79th minute due to the seriousness of the situation.
Doctor Reveals Eriksen Was Briefly Unconscious
Denmark national team doctor, Morten Boesen later provided an update that brought relief to millions of fans worldwide.
“He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly.”
Boesen confirmed that Eriksen was responsive shortly after receiving treatment.
“Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself. As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should.”
“He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him.”
“He will now undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident.”
“We are in ongoing contact with him and the doctors at the hospital, but, Christian is doing well, and he asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he was okay.”

A Frightening Echo of Euro 2020
Instant memories of June 12, 2021, were brought back, when Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s European Championship match against Finland in Copenhagen.
On that day, the midfielder collapsed without warning near the touchline and required emergency resuscitation on the field.
For several terrifying minutes, the football world feared the worst.
Teammates formed a human shield around Eriksen as medics fought to save his life.
After around 10 minutes of treatment, he was stretchered off the pitch before being taken to hospital.
UEFA later confirmed that Eriksen had survived, and after an emergency meeting, the match resumed.
Finland eventually won 1-0.
The incident became one of the most emotional moments in modern football history.

The Device That Saved His Career
Following the cardiac arrest, Eriksen was fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD); a special heart-monitoring device designed to detect and correct dangerous heart rhythms.
Hence, because Italian regulations prevented players with such devices from competing professionally, Eriksen’s contract with Inter Milan was terminated.
Many believed his playing career had come to an end, instead, Eriksen launched one of most inspiring comebacks.
Just eight months after nearly losing his life, he returned to professional football with Brentford in February 2022.
He later joined Manchester United, spending three seasons at Old Trafford before signing for German Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in 2025.
Before Sunday’s collapse, he had completed a full season with Wolfsburg, making 34 appearances during the 2025-26 campaign.

Eriksen Once Said He Felt Completely Safe
Before returning to football in 2022, Eriksen spoke openly about life with the ICD and insisted he had no fears about returning to the game.
Speaking to BBC Sport, he said:
“I don’t see any risk, no. I have an ICD, if anything would happen then I am safe.”
“I don’t really have any scared feelings about it, I don’t feel my ICD so if it gets hit I know it is safe enough.”
Ironically, Denmark’s medical team now believes the device may have done exactly what it was designed to do.
Boesen stated:
“As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should.”

Should Eriksen Retire?
Sunday’s incident has inevitably reopened a debate many believed had been settled when Eriksen returned to football in 2022.
From a medical standpoint, there is currently no indication that his ICD failed. In fact, Denmark’s medical team suggests the device functioned correctly.
However, the fact that Eriksen suffered another collapse serious enough to leave him briefly unconscious will raise understandable concerns.
The now likely difficult questions to ask are:
- Is it safe for Eriksen to continue playing at the highest level?
- Was this an isolated incident successfully managed by his ICD?
- Or is it a warning sign that further medical evaluation could recommend retirement?
At this stage, there are no answers.
Only the results of the hospital examinations and specialist medical assessments will determine the next step.
Whatever happens next, Eriksen’s place in football history is already secure.
The elegant playmaker began his professional career at Ajax before becoming a star at Tottenham Hotspur, where he made
- 305 appearances,
- scoring 69 goals and
- providing 88 assists.
He later
- – won trophies with Inter Milan,
- – completed a remarkable comeback with Brentford,
- – spent three seasons at Manchester United, and then
- – joined Wolfsburg.
Sunday’s appearance against Ukraine was his 151st international match for Denmark.
Now, five years after one of football’s greatest comeback stories began, Christian Eriksen finds himself facing another battle.
Football Clubs Rally Around Eriksen
Messages of support quickly flooded social media following news of the incident.
His current club and Bundesliga side, Wolfsburg, wrote:
“We’re thinking of you, Christian. All the best and a speedy recovery.”
Former club Tottenham Hotspur also issued a heartfelt statement:
“Our thoughts are with Christian Eriksen and his family. Wishing you a full and speedy recovery, Christian.”
“We’re all with you.”
Manchester United followed with their own message of support.
“Everybody at Manchester United is encouraged by Denmark’s update on Christian Eriksen following today’s abandoned friendly against Ukraine.”
“The club is sending strength and love to Christian and the Eriksen family as we await further news.”
The football world will be hoping that this latest scare proves to be only a temporary setback rather than the final chapter of an extraordinary career.
