‘Not Santa Claus’ – NPFL Players Fail to Impress Super Eagles Coach Again

The chances of any future invitation of NPFL based players to the Super Eagles is not guaranteed, Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has suggested.

Chelle named two NPFL players in the Super Eagles XI that beat Zimbabwe 2-0 in the Unity Cup semifinal match on Tuesday.

Chibueze Oputa and Kenneth Igboke got Chelle’s nod as starters on their Super Eagles debuts, while Aderemi Adeoye came off the bench late on in the match.

Speaking in his post-match, Chelle praised the trio for showing the ‘willingness to adapt, despite clear tactical and technical shortcomings.

“This is only a friendly game, not the World Cup qualifier or the AFCON. They need to work a lot, understand what I want and the high level is difficult,” Eric Chelle said in response to how the NPFL players faired.

“I just need some time to do my job; scout and work with players from the league (NPFL). It could be like a project if they (NFF) want.”

“But, I am not Santa Claus, this is not a gift. I will have to judge their performance.”
