Kouamé makes history with French Open win over Cilic

French teenager Moïse Kouamé produced one of the standout moments of the 2026 French Open after defeating former Grand Slam champion Marin Cilic in a first-round upset at Roland Garros.

Playing on Court Simonne-Mathieu, the 17-year-old wildcard delivered a fearless performance to beat the experienced Croatian 7-6(4), 6-2, 6-1 in straight sets on his Grand Slam debut.

The win immediately placed Kouamé into the tournament’s history books.

He became the youngest player in the Open Era to defeat a Grand Slam champion at Roland Garros, surpassing a record that had stood for 37 years.

What made the moment even more significant was the manner of victory.

After a tight opening set decided in a tiebreak, Kouamé took full control of the match, dominating the second and third sets as Cilic struggled to respond to the teenager’s intensity and shot-making.

The result marks a breakthrough moment for the Paris-born player, who entered the tournament as one of several wildcards and had limited experience at Grand Slam level.

Kouamé’s rise has been closely watched in French tennis circles, where he is seen as part of a new generation of talent expected to carry the country forward in the post- Gasquet and Monfils era.

His victory also continues a strong early trend in the 2026 French Open, where young players have already begun challenging established names in the opening rounds.

Kouamé now advances to the second round, where expectations will rise significantly after a debut performance that has already made him one of the most talked-about young players in the tournament.
