Two-Time AFCON Winner Hervé Renard Dismissed as Saudi Arabia Coach

Hervé Renard has been dismissed as head coach of Saudi Arabia with immediate effect, just two months before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Renard successfully guided Saudi Arabia to qualification for the tournament, finishing top of their group in the fourth round of qualifying.

Despite that achievement, a poor run of results in 2026 led to the decision to part ways with the Frenchman.

Heavy defeats in friendly matches, including a 4-0 loss to Egypt and a 2-1 defeat to Serbia, raised concerns about the team’s form heading into the World Cup.

Renard had two spells with the team and one major highlight of his time at the club was the historic 2-1 victory over Argentina at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia have moved quickly to appoint a replacement, with Al Khaleej coach Georgios Donis set to lead the Falcons at the World Cup.

Donis brings more than 23 years of managerial experience and a strong understanding of football in Saudi Arabia.

He first coached Al Hilal from 2015 to 2016, before taking charge of Al Wehda in 2021.

Currently the Greek coach is keeping Al Khaleej in mid-table, an impressive position for a club operating with a limited budget.

During his time in Saudi Arabia, Donis has won three trophies, all with Al Hilal.

His immediate task will be to restore confidence within the squad and establish a clear style of play capable of competing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Saudi Arabia have been drawn in a challenging group alongside Spain, Cape Verde, and Uruguay and will need to quickly adapt under their new coach as they prepare for the tournament.
