Ghana FA Turns to Super Eagles Target for Head Coach Role

The Ghana Football Association has included Tom Saintfiet among the candidates being considered for the vacant Black Stars head coach position.

The role became available earlier this week after Otto Addo was relieved of his duties following a run of five consecutive defeats.

With the World Cup only two months away, the federation is under mounting pressure to appoint a new manager.

The Black Stars are scheduled to face Panama national football team on June 18 at 12:00 AM Nigerian time.

Saintfiet is currently in charge of the Mali national team whom he led to the AFCON 2025 in Morocco.

Under his leadership, Mali reached the quarter-finals of the AFCON, relying on a disciplined defensive system and consistent tactical organization.

The Belgian tactician previously managed the Gambia from 2018 to 2024, overseeing a historic period for the country.

He led them to their first ever AFCON appearance in 2021 and guided them to the quarter-finals in their debut tournament.

The NFF had also considered hiring the Belgian before finally settling for Gernot Rohr, and Saintfiet has recently acknowledged he would fancy the Nigeria job.

Saintfiet’s contract with Mali is expected to expire soon and is unlikely to be renewed, which could make him an attractive and available option for Ghana.

However, his current salary remains a key consideration. Reports indicate he earns approximately €20,000 per month, a figure that may present a challenge for the Ghana FA.

The Ghana FA is expected to evaluate several candidates as it considers experience, tactical approach, and financial implications before making a final decision.

The appointment is seen as critical to the future of the Black Stars, who are aiming to recover from recent setbacks and perform strongly at the upcoming World Cup.

At the World Cup this summer, Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.
