Super Eagles and Blackburn Rovers defender, Ryan Alebiosu has revealed his determination to play a more prominent role for Nigeria going forward after making his senior international debut at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
The 24-year-old right wing-back was part of the Nigerian squad that finished third at the tournament, securing a bronze medal.
However, Alebiosu’s personal campaign was cut short by injury, limiting him to just one appearance during the competition.
The defender described the experience as unforgettable and motivating, while setting his sights firmly on future international involvement despite the setback.
AFCON Debut and a Medal to Remember
Alebiosu made his senior Super Eagles debut during Nigeria’s 3–1 victory over Uganda in the group stage, a match that would unfortunately prove to be his only appearance at the tournament after he sustained an injury.
Reflecting on the experience, the former Arsenal defender praised the atmosphere within the squad and the pride of representing Nigeria on the continental stage.
“It was amazing. It was a good bunch of players,” Alebiosu said.
“Nigeria obviously went there with the expectation to win it. That didn’t happen, but coming third was important.”
“We needed to come back with something, and we ended up coming back with the bronze medal. It was good to be a part of and a great experience.”
“Hopefully, the next AFCON in 2027, I can be a part of it as well.”
While Nigeria fell short of reaching the final, Alebiosu insists the bronze medal still holds deep personal meaning.
“It’s been a joy to come here and obviously be a part of this great team with all my brothers,” he added.
“Obviously, we came in wanting to win the tournament, and not making the final was a bit disappointing, but I am happy with the bronze.”
“It’s my first AFCON, my first international medal, and I will cherish it forever.”
Injury Frustration but Renewed Motivation
The Blackburn Rovers defender admitted it was difficult watching from the sidelines after suffering the injury that ruled him out of the remainder of the tournament, but he credited his teammates for helping him through the period.
“It’s a bit frustrating; I wanted to show what I could do at my first AFCON,” Alebiosu said.
“When it happened, the team came together and helped me a lot, and watching the team win games really boosted my morale.”
He added that the overall experience has only strengthened his desire to return and prove himself on the AFCON stage.
“The competition is brilliant. To be a part of this has obviously been a motivation to come back to the next AFCON and actually prove myself next time around.”
Focused on Blackburn and Club Form
Now back in England, Alebiosu has turned his attention to regaining full fitness and helping Blackburn Rovers finish the season strongly.
He recently returned to action, featuring for 29 minutes in a 1–1 draw against Watford on January 24, an important step in his recovery.
“Now that I’m back here, it’s all about getting myself on my feet, working hard, and helping the team as much as possible,” he said.
Alebiosu missed eight matches across all competitions while away on international duty, and Blackburn are currently battling to avoid relegation to League One.
The defender remains confident the squad can turn their fortunes around.
“Everyone’s eager and everyone is coming back, so we’re looking forward to these next three home games,” he stated.
“We’re all trying to be as ready as we can. That first win is something the group needs and I’m sure we will kick on and go from there.”
Ambition to Cement Super Eagles Place
Ryan Alebiosu also made it clear that representing Nigeria remains a major ambition, keeping his immediate focus on club football.
“One hundred percent, it’s something I strive for and work for,” he said.
“It’s something I would really look forward to next time. But right now, my focus is on club football and what I can do.”
