Iheanacho Returns to Full Training After Six-Match Injury Absence

Kelechi Iheanacho has handed Celtic a major boost after returning to full training ahead of Thursday’s (today) UEFA Europa League clash against Feyenoord in Rotterdam.

The Nigerian forward, who has been sidelined since October 23rd with a hamstring injury, was seen training with the rest of the squad on Wednesday, his first full session since suffering the setback.

Celtic confirmed his involvement through images and videos shared on their official social media pages, where the 29-year-old appeared in high spirits as he completed drills with his teammates.

Iheanacho Back on Grass as O’Neill Weighs Selection Options

Interim manager, Martin O’Neill has been cautious in recent weeks regarding Iheanacho’s fitness, but the striker has now recovered enough to make the travelling squad to the Netherlands.

Earlier, O’Neill had ruled him out of the league meeting against Kilmarnock, saying the forward needed “a few more weeks” to return to competitive action.

However, the manager now appears ready to reintroduce the Nigerian international, who is in line to make his first appearance under O’Neill since his appointment.

“Yeah, he is going to be out for a few more weeks. I think that obviously after Sunday we’ve got this fortnight break and we’ll see how things go from there.”

“But yeah, he certainly won’t be available for Sunday anyway.”

A Long-Awaited Return After Hamstring Setback

Kelechi Iheanacho suffered his injury just four minutes into Celtic’s 2-1 victory over Sturm Graz in the Europa League, forcing him off early in a match that derailed what had been an impressive start to life in Scotland.

The forward went on to miss six consecutive matches across all competitions, including:

  • The league fixture against Kilmarnock

  • The intense Old Firm derby against Rangers

  • The League Cup semifinal

  • Two Europa League fixtures

His absence coincided with a difficult period for the club, who had already been dealing with the shock departure of former manager Brendan Rodgers.

Strong Early Impact Before Injury

Before his injury setback, Iheanacho made a positive impression on the Celtic faithful. Having joined on a free transfer in late September, he wasted no time adapting to the Scottish champions.

He registered four goal involvements in eight appearances, including three goals, across competitions.

His versatility and link-up play earned praise, with many describing him as one of the team’s brightest sparks during the early part of the season.

He was expected to play a key role in Celtic’s revival under Rodgers before the manager was dismissed following poor results that left the club nine points behind leaders Hearts.

Uncertainty Over His Future Amid Transfer Rumours

Rumours have persisted that Celtic may consider offloading the Nigerian striker in the January window, especially with the squad undergoing restructuring under O’Neill.

His return to training, however, could shift the narrative if he proves his value quickly.

There is belief within the club that Iheanacho’s return could help restore attacking quality and consistency during a crucial period of the season.

AFCON Hopes Also on the Line

On the international front, Iheanacho will also be determined to regain top form ahead of December’s African Cup of Nations.

The forward last featured for Nigeria in the Unity Cup friendly against Jamaica, and with competition for forward roles intensifying under head coach Eric Chelle, every minute of club action is vital.

Celtic Receive Timely Boost Ahead of Crucial European Night

As the Hoops prepare for a difficult trip to Rotterdam, Iheanacho’s availability, whether from the start or off the bench, provides a significant boost.

Feyenoord remains one of the toughest opponents in the group, and Celtic will be hoping the Nigerian’s sharp movement and ability to find pockets of space can contribute to a positive result.
