Eric Chelle Apologises for ‘Voodoo’ Accusation Following World Cup Playoff Loss

Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle has apologised to the Democratic Republic of Congo following a controversial post-match comment in which he accused someone on the Leopards’ bench of using “voodoo” during the tense penalty shoot-out that dashed Nigeria’s World Cup hopes.

The CAF Playoff Final in Rabat on Sunday ended 1–1 after extra time, with Frank Onyeka giving Nigeria an early third-minute lead before Meschak Elia equalised in the 32nd minute.

DR Congo later triumphed 4–3 on penalties, with captain Chancel Mbemba converting the winning kick after substitute goalkeeper Timothy Fayulu saved Semi Ajayi’s effort.

Emotions boiled over immediately after the shoot-out, with Chelle involved in a brief but fiery altercation with members of DR Congo’s technical staff.

Hours later, the Malian-French coach moved swiftly to retract his comments and offer a public clarification.

“I Reacted Heatedly” – Eric Chelle Explains Touchline Clash

In a statement shared on social media, Chelle acknowledged that his initial remarks were made in the heat of the moment.

“After the match, I reacted heatedly to an altercation with a member of the DRC staff who tried to come into my technical area,” Chelle said.

He emphasised that his comment was not intended to insult the Congolese people or their coaching staff.

“I never intended to target the Congolese people or their staff, whom I respect. I am disappointed by our elimination but proud of my players.”

Chelle concluded his formal apology by congratulating the Leopards:

“Congratulations to Congo, who were the better team.”

The Super Eagles coach later expanded on the incident in a more detailed Instagram post, explaining deeper context behind the confrontation.

“Football is all about emotions. After the match, I reacted hotly to an altercation with a member of the DRC staff trying to come into my technical area.”

“I have never wanted to target the Congolese people or their staff, which I respect.”

“Disappointed in our elimination but proud of my players. Congratulations Congo, which was the best.”

“Their audience showed great fervor, just like ours. Moving forward together for what’s next.”

Before the heartbreaking loss, Chelle had led Nigeria on a 10–match unbeaten streak, including friendly games.

Though the World Cup setback is significant, the coach’s next challenge comes swiftly: the Africa Cup of Nations, which kicks off next month.

AFCON now presents an opportunity for Chelle to restore confidence, rebuild momentum, and win back the hearts of Nigerian fans.

DR Congo March On as Nigeria Face Hard Questions

DR Congo’s victory sends them into the inter-confederation playoffs in March 2026, where they will fight for a place in the expanded 48–team World Cup to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Nigeria, meanwhile, must confront the painful reality of missing the World Cup for the second time in a row, a major setback for Chelle, who was appointed with a clear mandate to lead the nation back to World Cup.

Nigeria’s AFCON Path: Group C Awaits

The Super Eagles have been drawn in Group C alongside:

Nigeria’s group stage fixtures:

  • Nigeria vs Tanzania — 23 December

  • Nigeria vs Tunisia — 27 December

  • Nigeria vs Uganda — 30 December

With emotions still raw from the playoff defeat, Chelle is expected to channel frustration into determination as Nigeria prepares for the continental tournament.
