South Africa head coach, Hugo Broos has expressed confidence that his side remains in a stronger position to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup ahead of Nigeria and Benin Republic.
Bafana Bafana aim to end their 16-year absence from football’s biggest stage.
Speaking ahead of their game against Zimbabwe on Friday, Broos emphasized the need for a big result.
“The situation has changed slightly because of the deduction of three points, but that’s the only change,” Broos said.

“Maybe the next games are historical — everyone knows it’s been 24 years since South Africa could qualify for the World Cup (They earned their 2010 spot as hosts). Even with a three-point lead, we still have to win our last two games to be mathematically sure of qualification.”
The Belgian tactician noted that three other teams, alongside South Africa, remain in contention.
“There are four teams involved — it’s impossible for all four to win their two matches.
That’s why Friday’s game is so important. If we win, we move to 17 points. Even if Nigeria win both games, they can only reach 17 points. Rwanda can also get 17 if they win twice, but Benin can’t because they face both Nigeria and Rwanda,” he explained.
Broos reaffirmed his belief in his squad’s ability to deliver when it matters most.

“There have never been doubts from my side. I believe in this group, and I’m sure they will do everything on Friday to win that game.”
South Africa will kick off their match against Zimbabwe at 5 p.m. local time at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, the same time Nigeria face Lesotho.
