U20 FIFA World Cup: Nigeria Off to Poor Start, Zubairu’s Flying Eagles Lose to Norway

Nigeria were narrowly defeated by Norway in their opening match of the U20 FIFA World Cup, with Rasmus Holten’s first-half penalty proving the difference between the two sides.

Despite the loss, it was a dominant performance from the Flying Eagles, who were clearly the superior side on the night.

Nigeria enjoyed 66% possession, registered 20 shots, and completed 420 passes, compared to Norway’s 34% possession, five shots, and 186 passes.

The Flying Eagles came close to scoring on numerous occasions, but the ball just wouldn’t find the back of the net.

Kparobo Arierhi had a golden opportunity in the 47th minute when he found himself in space inside the box, but his effort went wide. Fifteen minutes later, Tahir Maigana rattled the woodwork.

He again came close late in the game after beating his marker, but he couldn’t find a way past Einar Bøe Fauskanger, sending the ball wide instead.

Ahmed Akinyele was Nigeria’s standout performer on the night.

The centre-back impressed in both defense and buildup play. Operating as a ball-playing defender, Akinyele stepped forward comfortably and distributed the ball with precision.

Akinyele recorded 111 touches, completed 80 passes including 21 into the final third and delivered six accurate long balls.

Defensively, he was rock solid, completing 100% of his tackles, making six clearances, and recovering the ball eight times.

He also showcased his physical prowess, winning five ground duels and five aerial duels.

Next Nigeria will face Saudi Arabia, who lost 1-0 to Colombia, and the match is scheduled for October 3rd.

The Flying Eagles will need to show strong mentality and character if they are to bounce back and keep their tournament hopes alive.
