Flying Eagles Hit by Key Withdrawals Ahead of FIFA U-20 World Cup

The Flying Eagles’ preparations for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup have suffered a setback following the withdrawal of several key players.

Stade Reims and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim have refused to release Nigerian players for the competition in Chile, as the tournament is not listed on FIFA’s official calendar.

As a result, Hoffenheim duo Emmanuel Chukwu and Precious Benjamin, along with Stade Reims striker Ibrahim Hafiz, will miss the tournament.

Flying Eagles head coach, Aliyu Zubairu has been forced to adjust his plans and name a final 21-man squad without several overseas-based players.

Captain, Daniel Bameyi leads the squad, which includes a mix of familiar faces from recent training camps and fresh additions.

New call-ups include Israel Ayuma, Ebenezer Harcourt, Charles Agada, Auwal Ibrahim, Kparobo Arierhi, Tahir Maigana, and Odinaka Okoro.

However, fullback Adamu Maigari has been ruled out after sustaining a knee injury.

Midfielder Daniel Daga is expected to join the team directly at the tournament venue ahead of their opening group match.

Nigeria will be aiming to improve on their recent performances and make a strong push for the title when the tournament kicks off later this month.

Zubairu has affirmed that the team has set clear goals ahead of the tournament.

The NFF confirmed that the Flying Eagles departed for Istanbul, Sunday, for a final preparation camp before traveling to Chile.

Speaking at the camp before their departure, Zubairu said the team’s primary objective is to represent Nigeria to the best of their ability.

He added that the first priority would be to progress from the group stage, which will set the tone for the subsequent rounds.

Meanwhile, Nigeria will begin its campaign against Norway on September 29.
