Victor Boniface: Werder Bremen Makes Statement Signing

Werder Bremen has officially announced the signing of Nigerian striker, Victor Boniface on a season-long loan, valid until June 2026.

As part of the agreement, Bremen will cover a portion of the forward’s salary.

The Bundesliga side identified Boniface as a crucial addition, given their lack of depth in attack, with Marco Grüll and Justin Njinmah being the only recognized centre-forwards in the squad.

In his two full seasons at Bayer Leverkusen, Boniface made 42 league appearances and scored 22 goals with 11 assists.

But, after a difficult start to the current campaign, the club felt the urgency to bring in a new striker to strengthen their options.

The Green-Whites have exited the DFB-Pokal early, similarly, they suffered a 4-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in their Bundesliga opener, and were held to a 3-3 draw this past weekend.

However, for Boniface, the move represents a fresh opportunity to get consistent playing time.

The forward has yet to make a competitive appearance this season and will be eager to rediscover the form.

Yet, the transfer is not without risk from Bremen’s perspective.

Following a failed move to AC Milan over his injury history, the Player’s health record raises concerns.

He missed 14 matches last season due to thigh and hamstring issues, both linked to recurring knee problems.

Regardless, the timing of the move could work in his favour, with the international break underway, Boniface will have space to settle in and focus on regaining full fitness.

He will not feature for Nigeria in their upcoming World Cup qualifiers, having been omitted from Eric Chelle’s latest squad.

This break gives him valuable time to prepare for life in Bremen and prove himself once again in the Bundesliga.
