Egwuekwe Slams CHAN Eagles’ Performance, Questions NPFL Standard

Former Super Eagles defender, Azubuike Egwuekwe, has expressed disappointment over the performance of the CHAN Eagles at the ongoing African Nations Championship.

He described it as a poor reflection of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

Speaking to Brila.net, Egwuekwe said the team’s struggles have further weakened the case for home-based players to earn regular opportunities with the senior national team.

“I’m very disappointed. I have always been one of those who insisted that home-based players deserve a chance with the Super Eagles, but this performance is discouraging. I don’t believe a country like Sudan should be beating Nigeria 4-0,” he lamented.

The former international stressed that the result underlines the decline of the NPFL, urging the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to urgently address the situation.

“This shows clearly that our league is not growing. The league is really down, and the NFF need to do something before it gets worse.

“How do you now justify using these players alongside foreign-based professionals in World Cup qualifiers or at the Africa Cup of Nations? As far as I’m concerned, they have disappointed him (Chelle),” Egwuekwe concluded.

Nigeria dropped to the bottom of Group D following their humiliating defeat to Sudan. They will take on Congo in their final group stage match, having already been eliminated after the 4-0 loss.
