Nigeria began their campaign at the 2025 WAFU B U20 Championship with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Ghana on Thursday.
Ghana took an early lead in the 23rd minute through Musibau Aziz, who fired home from the edge of the box after a well-worked move down the right flank.
Despite trailing for much of the encounter, Nigeria remained resilient and found their equalizer late in the second half.
Abdoulahi Abiodun Muhammed rose highest to head in a corner kick eight minutes from full time, rescuing a point for the defending champions.
Both sides settled for a share of the spoils in what was a tense Group A opener, with Nigeria
now shifting focus to their second group match against Benin Republic on Sunday.
Head coach Aliyu Zubairu will be encouraged by the team’s fighting spirit but will expect an
improved performance in the final third as the Flying Eagles aim for a place in the semifinals.
