A 39-year-old man has been handed a 10-year prison term for raping his friend’s wife in South Africa.
The conviction took place on Monday, October 28, 2024, at the Lydenburg Regional Court in Mpumalanga province.
The rapist’s name has been withheld to protect the identity of the victim.
According to court testimony, the incident occurred in May 2022. A group of four friends, including a 44-year-old woman, gathered for drinks following a funeral in Lydenburg.
“The victim felt tired and decided to call it a day,”
explained Mpumalanga provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli.
“They all got into a car and dropped her at home. Afterward, they returned for entertainment, and the house was locked by the victim’s husband.”
During the trial, it emerged that the 39-year-old man chose to return to the house where they had left his friend’s wife, leaving his friend at the entertainment venue.
“He managed to obtain the house keys and then entered the room where the woman was asleep,” Mdhluli stated. “It was during this time when the accused committed the rape.”
The incident was promptly reported to the authorities, and the specialized Family Violence, Child Protection and $exual Offenses (FCS) unit was tasked with investigating.
Following a thorough investigation, the 39-year-old perpetrator was apprehended.
“The man appeared in court on several occasions before being convicted and ultimately receiving the 10-year direct imprisonment on Monday, October 28, 2024,”
Mdhluli noted.
Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended the exceptional work of investigators, prosecutors, and judicial officials involved in handling the sensitive case.
“We are actively addressing the issue of gender-based violence, and we are pleased whenever perpetrators of these heinous crimes are removed from society for extended periods, such as in this instance,”
Mkhwanazi emphasized.
This case serves as another example of law enforcement efforts to combat gender-based violence and bring offenders to justice.
