Hugo Viana, born on January 15, 1983, in Barcelos, Portugal, has a rich history in football both as a player and an executive. He began his career at Sporting CP before moving to Newcastle United, where he gained valuable experience in English football. His playing career also included stints at Valencia and Al Ahli in the UAE, among others.

Since 2018, Viana has served as the sporting director at Sporting CP, where he played a crucial role in revitalizing the club’s fortunes. Under his leadership, Sporting won the Portuguese league title in 2021 and again in 2024. His strategic vision helped bring in key players and appoint successful managers like Ruben Amorim, who have contributed significantly to Sporting’s recent successes.

The decision for Begiristain to step down comes after a successful tenure that saw Manchester City rise to prominence in English football. His departure raises questions about the future direction of the club, especially regarding manager Pep Guardiola, whose contract is also set to expire at the end of this season. Txiki Begiristain has been instrumental in Guardiola’s appointment and their collaboration has led to numerous trophies, including a historic treble.

In light of these changes, Manchester City aims to maintain its competitive edge. The club is optimistic that Viana’s expertise in player recruitment and management will facilitate this goal. The transition period will allow Viana to familiarize himself with City’s operational structure while benefiting from Begiristain’s extensive knowledge.
