Newsypeople – Tottenham Hotspur has taken the decisive step to suspend midfielder Yves Bissouma for their Premier League opener against Leicester City on Monday, following the emergence of a controversial video over the weekend. In the footage, the 27-year-old Mali international is seen inhaling from a balloon, allegedly filled with nitrous oxide, commonly referred to as laughing gas.

In his statement, Bissouma admitted to a “serious lapse in judgment” and conveyed his regret for his actions. However, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has stressed that there will be repercussions for Bissouma’s conduct, both on and off the pitch.

“We’ve suspended him for Monday’s match. Beyond that, there’s work to be done in rebuilding trust between Biss and me, as well as between him and the team. He has to commit to regaining that trust moving forward—he’ll need to earn it,”

Postecoglou stated.

Since 2023, the recreational use of nitrous oxide has been illegal in the UK, with potential penalties including a two-year prison sentence. Postecoglou underscored t

he responsibilities that come with being a professional footballer and the importance of serving as a positive role model for fans and the youth who admire Premier League players.

Despite this setback, Spurs supporters can anticipate the potential debut of new signing Dominic Solanke, who joined from Bournemouth in a reported £65 million transfer. Postecoglou commended Solanke’s professionalism and is confident that he possesses the qualities to integrate seamlessly into the team’s style of play.

As Tottenham gears up for the new season, Postecoglou feels optimistic about the squad being in better shape and more cohesive than last year, with most players available for selection. Nonetheless, the Bissouma incident serves as a poignant reminder of how off-field distractions can significantly affect a team’s performance and unity.
