Swiatek, the defending champion, had to weather a storm in the middle of the match as former world No. 1 Osaka won 11 of 14 games and served for the match at 5-3 in the third set. However, Swiatek found a huge return to save match point and won five games in a row to seal the victory.

The match was a clash of titans, with Swiatek having not lost a match at Roland Garros since 2021 and only been beaten twice at the venue in her career. Osaka, on the other hand, has only won 8 of her 13 matches at the French Open and had not reached the third round of a Grand Slam since 2022.
Despite her discomfort on clay, Osaka did not seem intimidated and went toe-to-toe with Swiatek, forcing a tiebreak in the first set. Swiatek won the tiebreak 7-6, but Osaka responded by playing her best set of tennis in two years, losing only one point on serve and breaking Swiatek three times to win the second set 6-1.

The crowd seemed torn between supporting Swiatek and Osaka, with Swiatek’s opponent usually getting the benefit of the crowd’s goodwill at Roland Garros. However, Osaka was striking the ball so purely that the crowd seemed to appreciate the quality of her play.
In the deciding set, Swiatek clawed her way back from 5-2 down and saved a match point before taking full advantage of late errors from a nervy Osaka to seal the victory.
