Why Francisca Ordega Got Super Falcons Recall

Forward, Francisca Ordega is fired up for her return to the Super Falcons, as Nigeria begins final preparations for the 2024 WAFCON scheduled to hold in Morocco.

The veteran was recalled to the national team for Tuesday’s friendly against Cameroon, her first involvement with the Falcons since the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

“I Will Try to Give All I Have” — Ordega

Having won four WAFCON titles (2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018), Ordega believes her wealth of experience will be a critical asset to the Super Falcons’ push to reclaim their continental crown.

“I am still going to give what I have. The experience and if they want me to talk to them as a professional and on the field, I will set an example for them to follow,” she said.

“I will try to give all I have, all I have learnt in the past years that I have been in the game. I’ll bring it in and let us see where it goes.”

Ordega is optimistic that Nigeria can bounce back from the disappointment of losing their crown in 2022, citing the hunger within the younger players to experience the thrill of winning.

“Everybody wants to win. Nobody wants to go there and lose.”

“Other countries want to win as well but that should be at the back of our minds; this is what we want to do.

“I believe most of these young girls have not tasted that victory before and I know they have so much in them.”

“They want to fight and win. We lost it the last time but this year, we must have that feeling of being an African champion.”

Super Falcons in Group B

Nigeria, nine-time champions and Africa’s most successful women’s national team, will face Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana.

Madugu: “Francisca Has Earned the Opportunity”

Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu provided clarity on Ordega’s return to the fold, revealing that her exclusion in previous camps was due to injury.

“Francisca was supposed to be part of the team against France, but she had a slight injury that prevented her from joining us.”

“Since then, we’ve monitored her performance. Last year in Russia, she was among the league’s top scorers, and she’s continued in good form since moving to Saudi Arabia.”

“She has earned the opportunity to be here. With her experience, we believe she can help guide the younger players and motivate them through her accomplishments,” he explained.

Home-Based Talent, Broader Vision

Madugu also spoke on the federation’s plan to integrate home-based talents, giving them valuable exposure ahead of the WAFCON.

“It was our plan to play two games and give everyone an opportunity to participate.”

“Even with the schedule changes, it’s still our desire to make sure each player has a chance to get on the pitch and feel the intensity of international football.”

“Mission X”: Falcons Eye 10th WAFCON Title

With less than a month until the continental showpiece kicks off in Morocco, Madugu reaffirmed the Falcons’ determination to win a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.

“I appeal to Nigerians to wish the team well and continue to support us.”

“The Super Falcons have earned their place in the hearts of the people through their achievements on the continent.”

“We know what lies ahead, and we are determined to ensure that Mission X becomes a reality.”
