“We Have to Win” – Eric Chelle Targets Bronze Medal as Super Eagles Battle Egypt

Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle has spoken with resolve and emotion ahead of Nigeria’s CAF Africa Cup of Nations third-place (bronze medal) play-off against Egypt, scheduled for today, Saturday 16 January, in Morocco.

Nigeria are still coming to terms with a painful semi-final exit after a 0–0 draw against hosts Morocco, which ended in a 4–2 defeat on penalties, denying the Super Eagles a place in the final.

Eric Chelle has requested that his side must channel their emotions positively as they prepare for one final push at AFCON Morocco 2025.

Nigeria vs Egypt: One Last Battle at AFCON 2025

The Super Eagles will lock horns with seven-time African champions Egypt at 17h00 local time (16h00 GMT), with both teams eager to finish the tournament on a high.

Nigeria are targeting a record ninth AFCON bronze medal, while Egypt, who have previously won the third-place play-off three times, are seeking to add to their decorated continental history.

“We Have the Last Game, We Have to Win” – Eric Chelle

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Eric Chelle made it clear that Nigeria’s objective is non-negotiable, stressing that the team’s overall performance at the tournament deserves a medal.

“We have the last game, we have to do a good game, we have to look for a winning because we did a great tournament, so we have to come back in Nigeria with the third place.”

The Super Eagles boss acknowledged the emotional toll of the semi-final defeat but is more focused the importance of mental strength heading into the bronze medal clash.

Eric Chelle Speaks on Match Pressure

Chelle did not shy away from expressing how hard the defeat to Morocco has been, admitting that the disappointment still lingers within the camp.

“For me, today it’s difficult to keep my head up, but the only solution that I found is a big smile.”

“So this is not a question about the pressure, because I want to win this game and I have a lot of pressure.”

The Malian tactician believes it is a necessary part of competing at the highest level and something he must embrace.

Full Focus on Egypt

With little time to dwell on what might have been, Chelle revealed that his attention is now solely on preparing the team tactically and mentally for Egypt.

“For example, I just need three hours to think about the game, so now I just want to win this game, and after this AFCON once again, we can think of everything.”

Chelle underline a single-minded focus on the task ahead, as Nigeria aim to close the tournament with pride.

Victory over Egypt would see Nigeria:

  • Secure a record ninth AFCON bronze medal
  • Extend their perfect record in third-place play-off matches

For Chelle and his players, the bronze medal match represents more than just third place, it is an opportunity to validate their performances, restore morale, and return home with tangible success.

As kickoff approaches, the Super Eagles know that one final performance stands between disappointment and pride.
