‘We Are Truly Sorry’: Osimhen Apologises for World Cup Failure, Targets AFCON Redemption

Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen has issued a heartfelt apology to Nigerian football fans following the national team’s failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, admitting that the pain and disappointment felt by supporters is fully shared by the players.

The 26-year-old forward, who is currently Nigeria’s second-highest goal scorer of all time, acknowledged the magnitude of missing out on football’s biggest global tournament and described the setback as deeply painful for everyone connected to the team.

Speaking ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Osimhen explained that the players understand the emotional weight of the failure and are determined to use the continental showpiece as an opportunity for redemption.

“We are so sorry for not getting the World Cup tickets and we know the disappointment on the faces of Nigerian fans,” Osimhen said.

“For us, life has happened and we have to keep it moving.”

“We Know the Disappointment” – Osimhen Reveals Pressure Inside Camp

Despite intense scrutiny and high expectations from supporters at home and abroad, Osimhen insisted that the Super Eagles camp remains focused rather than burdened by pressure.

According to the Napoli-born striker, belief in the squad’s quality is strong, and the atmosphere within the team is one of determination rather than fear.

“The expectation is really high not just within the camp but from the Super Eagles fans all over the world,” he explained.

“I think as much as the expectation is high, there is not a single pressure on my teammates and coaches.”

Osimhen added that confidence in the squad’s ability is unwavering.

“We know the type of quality we possess, and AFCON is an opportunity for us to write our wrongs, to try to make the Super Eagles fans all over the world believe that there is so much more we can give.”

AFCON as a Chance to ‘Write Our Wrongs’

The Galatasaray forward was clear that AFCON represents more than just another tournament—it is a chance to restore belief, reconnect with fans, and compete for silverware.

While acknowledging how difficult the competition will be, Osimhen emphasized the importance of taking responsibility and approaching each match with focus.

“This AFCON is an opportunity for us to do well and try to win the tournament,” he said.

“It’s not easy to win it, but we must take every game as it comes and see if we can as well win it.”

Super Eagles Past AFCON Struggles

Osimhen has previously featured in two AFCON tournaments, scoring just once, a goal that came during the last edition.

His performances at that tournament attracted questions on whether he had delivered at the level expected of Nigeria’s marquee striker.

Now firmly established as one of the senior figures in the squad, Osimhen understands the responsibility that comes with his status as both a leader and the team’s primary attacking threat.

His role will be central to Nigeria’s ambitions as the Super Eagles look to challenge for continental glory.

Strong Form and Historic Milestone in Sight

Heading into the tournament, Osimhen is in impressive form. The Galatasaray striker has scored 17 goals this season for club and country, a run that has raised expectations that he can finally translate his scoring touch onto the AFCON stage.

Beyond team success, Osimhen is also closing in on a major personal milestone.

With 29 goals for Nigeria, he is chasing the long-standing record of Rashidi Yekini, the Super Eagles’ all-time leading goal scorer with 37 goals.
