Super Falcons interim head coach, Justin Madugu has issued a bold statement of intent ahead of Nigeria’s crucial quarter-final clash against Zambia in the 2024 WAFCON, assuring Nigerians that the team is “fully prepared” for the battle against the Copper Queens in Casablanca, Morocco.
The match, scheduled to take place today (Friday), is set to be a deciding clash between two African powerhouses vying for a place in the semi-finals and a step closer to continental glory.
Madugu: “We are equally prepared and ready for it”
Speaking during the official pre-match press conference, Coach Madugu noted the strength and pedigree of the Zambian side, led by the explosive striker Barbara Banda, but stated that his team is not intimidated and is determined to emerge victorious.
“The Zambian team, as we all know, they are a good side. They have come of age and they pose a lot of threats based on the quality and the calibre of players they have in the team.”
That also comes with extra pressure on anybody,” Madugu said.
The experienced tactician added that the Super Falcons are under no illusions about the task at hand and are leaving no room for complacency.
“It comes with extra pressure because it doesn’t give room for mistakes. You must get ready, fully prepared for them in all aspects. For the game, we know what they can do,” he continued.
“We are equally prepared and ready for it. We will wait and see at the end of the game.”
Toni Payne: “We’re definitely prepared for whatever they’re gonna throw at us”
Meanwhile, Super Falcons midfielder Toni Payne echoed her coach’s sentiments, describing the Zambians as formidable opponents but reiterated that Nigeria’s focus remains unshaken.
“Zambia’s a very strong team. They have, you know, really strong attackers, you know, Barbara Banda,” Payne stated.
“So yeah, I mean, we’re definitely very wary of their team. We respect every team that we play, but we’re definitely prepared for whatever they’re gonna throw at us and, we’re gonna do our best to make it to the next round.”
Clash of Titans in Casablanca
Nigeria, who topped their group with clinical performances, will be banking on a blend of youth and experience to overcome the Copper Queens. Rinsola Babajide, who got off the mark in the tournament against Tunisia, will look to extend her goals alongside seasoned stars like Ashleigh Plumptre, Asisat Oshoala and Rasheedat Ajibade.
Zambia, on the other hand, came second in their group behind Morocco with their attacking flair, led by Banda, who remains one of the most lethal forwards on the continent.
Victory for Nigeria would see them through to the semi-finals and one win away from clinching a record-extending 12th WAFCON title. For Zambia, a win would be a huge milestone as they chase their first major continental trophy.
Kick-off is scheduled for;
