Victor Wanyama Announces Retirement After 19-Year Career

Kenyan football icon Victor Wanyama has said goodbye to professional football at the age of 34, bringing an end to a remarkable 19-year career.

Wanyama featured for six clubs across four countries most notably Celtic, Southampton, and Tottenham Hotspur.

During his illustrious career, he made history as the first Kenyan player to score in the UEFA Champions League, achieving the feat in Celtic’s 2-1 victory over FC Barcelona on November 7, 2012.

While at Celtic, Wanyama won two Scottish Premiership titles and lifted the Scottish Cup. He later reached the UEFA Champions League final with Tottenham Hotspur.

Announcing his retirement in a statement shared on X, Wanyama reflected on his journey, saying:

“Today i announce my retirement from football, Four different countries six different clubs, A boy from Muthurwa with a big dream, carrying a Nations pride every time i stepped onto the pitch. To my family, friends, agent, the fans and the coaching staff that helped me throughout.”

Following the announcement, his former clubs paid tribute across social media, celebrating his contributions and memorable moments. Former Tottenham teammate Lucas Moura wrote:

“It was a pleasure to play with you my brother, all the best on your next chapter . May God bless you.”

On the international stage, Wanyama earned 64 caps for the Kenya national football team, scoring six goals. He also captained the Harambee Stars during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Wanyama leaves behind a legacy as one of Kenya’s most successful and influential footballers, having inspired a generation with his achievements on both club and international stages.
