Victor Boniface made his first start for Werder Bremen in the club’s 1-0 victory over Union Berlin, delivering a solid all-round performance.
Werder Bremen looked the better side throughout, registering 16 total shots, 58% possession, and 410 passes, compared to Union Berlin’s 12 shots, 42% possession, and 269 passes.
Boniface showed glimpses of his quality on the night. He completed 14 passes, including three into the final third, created one chance, and completed one successful dribble.

Defensively, he contributed with one clearance and two ball recoveries, while also displaying his physical strength by winning three ground duels and two aerial duels.
After the game, Werder Bremen head coach Horst Steffen praised the Nigerian forward for his effort and attitude.
“He put in a lot of effort, presented himself well, and worked for the team. A very good game,” Steffen said.
“The match gave me the feeling that he’s ready now. He confirmed that impression. I’m very happy that he was able to help us win the game. He showed how good he can be.
“It’s nice that he lasted so long and presented himself so well.”

“The commitment was excellent, and the way we played was good in parts as well.
“We were one goal better, even though Union were always dangerous and we had to defend a lot of crosses and set pieces. The team accepted the kind of match we expected and therefore deserved the three points.”
Steffen added, “We’re improving step by step. The players are showing great attitude in training and on the pitch. I like the energy and togetherness we’re building. That’s what makes me optimistic.”
Werder Bremen will now turn their attention to their next Bundesliga fixture against Mainz next week.
