Uganda Approves Additional 905Bn for AFCON 2027 Preparations

The Government of Uganda has approved an additional $240.97 million (UGX 905 billion) to accelerate preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

The funding decision follows a recent CAF inspection which revealed that none of the country’s existing stadiums currently meet the required Category 4 standards.

The supplementary budget was announced by Dr. Dennis K. Mugimba, Chairperson of the Communications and Signage Sub-Committee of the Local Organising Committee.

Dr. Mugimba described the allocation as part of a “whole-of-government and whole-of-country” approach aimed at ensuring Uganda successfully hosts the continental tournament.

With this latest allocation, Uganda’s total expenditure on AFCON 2027 preparations now exceeds over $588 million.

The country’s primary venues for the tournament will be the renovated Mandela National Stadium (Namboole) in Kampala and the newly constructed Hoima City Stadium.

Both facilities are set to be upgraded to meet CAF Category 4 requirements, including increased seating capacity, enhanced floodlighting, and improved media and broadcast facilities.

In addition to these flagship venues, several other grounds have been proposed to support the tournament.
