Troost-Ekong Clears doubts, Praises Fredericks After Super Eagles Victory

Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong addressed rumors surrounding his disappointment at not starting in the Super Eagles’ crucial World Cup qualifying win over Rwanda.
Speaking after the game, the experienced defender dismissed the speculation and instead praised youngster Benjamin Fredericks, who delivered an impressive performance on his competitive debut for the national team.

“The focus shouldn’t be on me, on why I didn’t start,” Troost-Ekong said. “I think we should say a big congratulations to Benjamin (Fredericks).

“He played an amazing game. To come into a match that carried so much pressure at his age is not an easy thing, and he handled it really well.”

The Super Eagles captain also emphasized on the squad’s full commitment to qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying the players are determined to give everything to book their place in the USA next year.

“We have another important game on Tuesday,” he continued.

“I saw the changing room right after the final whistle, and there was no celebration—just the pure desire to keep pushing forward.

“We truly believe in what we are doing, and while we can only control the things within our reach, we will take it step by step. The next step is South Africa.”

The clash against Rwanda marked Troost-Ekong’s 80th appearance for the Super Eagles.

Despite coming on late—replacing Cyriel Dessers in the 87th minute—he showed composure and leadership in the dying moments of the game.

With the weight of Tuesday’s encounter against South Africa, there is a possibility that Eric Chelle may consider a back-five formation, to accommodate Ekong in centre defence.
