Taribo West Blasts NSC, NFF Over Neglect of ‘Sports Legends’

Former Super Eagles defender, Taribo West has launched a scathing attack on Nigeria’s football authorities following the death of goalkeeper Peter Rufai.

He condemned the country’s failure to honour and care for its football icons.

Visibly emotional, West admitted Rufai’s passing left him in tears.

“My mother passed on, I never shed tears. My father passed on in my hands, I never shed tears. When Rufai passed on, I had goosebumps on my body. Tears rolled down my cheeks,” he said.

The former Inter Milan star described it as a national disgrace that Rufai’s family had to seek financial help.

“Could you imagine that the family would be crying, just to ask for money within our group? That is madness!” he lamented.

West accused the Nigeria Football Federation of lacking the structures to protect and celebrate those who gave their best for the country.

He cited the neglect of past legends like Stephen Keshi, Rashidi Yekini, Thompson Oliha and Yisa Sofoluwe.

“With this kind of example, I will never advise even my son to put his feet for this country,” he declared.

Calling Rufai a “hero and soldier,” West said Nigeria’s treatment of its football greats is shameful and has left him disillusioned about the value of wearing the green and white jersey.
