Former Super Eagles defender, Sam Sodje has stressed that the only focus for Nigeria now should be qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking to Brila.net, Sodje said the time for talking is over and players must step up when it matters most.
“When it comes to the national team, God is with Nigeria. There was a time we thought there was no chance and suddenly God opened a way.
“I have been in so many playoffs and when it comes to it, form, players, and big names go out of the window,” Sodje said.
“Every game in a playoff is like a final. I played once when I was at West Brom, we beat Derby 7-0 earlier in the season, but they beat us 1-0 in the final. Playoffs are one time games.
“Hopefully the Super Eagles technical team know how to win a one time game like this. The semifinal against Gabon is not about tactics or style, just focus on how to win.
“That is the best way to approach playoffs. Nothing about past results. Some players thrive in one off games and we need to recognize that.”
Sodje also said the NFF must do their part off the pitch, but emphasized that performance on the field is now entirely down to the players.

“I am tired of criticizing the NFF; let us leave them out of it. All they need to do is give the players what they need. What happens on the pitch from now on in the playoffs is not their fault.
“Hopefully we do not repeat the same mistakes. With the players we have, a big country like Nigeria should not even be in this position, but since we are here now, we just have to support them and stay positive. Hopefully we get the players who can see us through.”
Sodje Charges the Super Eagles
“Going to the World Cup gives you an open conversation. You get a different world outside football. It separates you from just being a footballer.
“I was not opportune to be at the World Cup, so I know what I am talking about. The World Cup is everything and these guys need to understand that.”

Praise for Victor Osimhen’s leadership and work ethic
“If Osimhen can do what he is doing, his attitude is what will win Nigeria the playoffs. His attitude brings out the best in other players.
“The goalkeeper for example, you have to talk to your teammates, make sure everyone is on the same page. One person’s mistake can affect the whole country.
“Everyone has to work together. No pressure. This is why we play football and this is the kind of challenge we love.
“The fans deserve to be at the World Cup. With the players we have, we should be there.”
Sam Sodje made five appearances for Nigeria during his international career.
Born in England, he represented the Super Eagles alongside his brother Efe Sodje.
He played for several clubs in England including Brentford, Leeds United, Watford and West Brom.
