PSG Thrash Chelsea 5-Goal Rout to Seize Control of Champions League Clash

Champions League holders, Paris Saint‑Germain produced a devastating late surge to defeat Chelsea FC 5-2 in the first leg of their last-16 tie at the Parc des Princes.

However, the match will be remembered as much for a costly mistake by goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen as for the brilliance of substitute Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Chelsea had battled back twice to level the game at 2-2 and looked capable of leaving Paris with a valuable result.

Instead, a disastrous error from Jorgensen sparked a late collapse that allowed PSG to seize a commanding three-goal advantage heading into next week’s return leg at Stamford Bridge.

Kvaratskhelia came off the bench to score twice in the closing stages, sealing a crushing win for the European champions and leaving Chelsea with a monumental task in the second leg.

PSG Strike Early Through Barcola

PSG wasted little time asserting themselves in front of their home supporters.

Just ten minutes into the contest, Bradley Barcola broke the deadlock, powering a fierce shot through a crowd of Chelsea defenders and inside the near post after a cross from Ousmane Dembele had been nodded into his path.

It was a particularly satisfying moment for Barcola, who had been questioned before the match about his lack of Champions League goals over the past year.

Chelsea goalkeeper Jorgensen soon redeemed himself temporarily by tipping a powerful effort from Dembele onto the post.

But the visitors quickly responded.

Gusto and Fernandez Lead Chelsea Fightback

Chelsea drew level when Malo Gusto surged forward and finished confidently past PSG goalkeeper, Matvei Safonov after being picked out by Enzo Fernandez.

The parity did not last long.

Just 14 seconds after Cole Palmer fired straight at Safonov from inside the penalty area, PSG struck again on the counterattack.

Dembele outran defender Wesley Fofana before calmly sidefooting past Jorgensen to restore the hosts’ lead.

The goal had been created by an excellent run from Desire Doue, who evaded challenges from Moises Caicedo and Trevoh Chalobah before releasing the French forward.

Chelsea Level Again After PSG Error

Chelsea continued to compete strongly and found another equaliser in the second half.

Doue, who had been instrumental in PSG’s second goal, was caught in possession by Pedro Neto.

The Portuguese winger delivered a low cross that Fernandez steered into the net to make it 2-2 and give Chelsea renewed belief.

At that stage, the Blues had matched PSG in intensity, creativity and tactical bravery.

But the turning point came shortly after.

Jorgensen’s Costly Error Changes the Game

With less than 20 minutes remaining, Jorgensen attempted to play out from the back but misjudged his pass completely, sending the ball straight to Barcola.

The PSG forward quickly laid the ball into the path of Vitinha, who calmly lobbed the stranded goalkeeper to restore the hosts’ lead for the third time.

The mistake proved catastrophic for Chelsea.

Their composure vanished as PSG sensed blood.

Kvaratskhelia Delivers Late Magic

Moments after coming on as a substitute, Kvaratskhelia produced a moment of pure brilliance.

The Georgian attacker curled a sensational strike from the edge of the penalty area beyond Jorgensen to make it 4-2.

Then, with virtually the last kick of the match, he added his second of the night with a composed side-footed finish to complete the scoring at 5-2.

The late double ensured PSG will travel to London next week with a commanding advantage.

Neto Apologises After Ball Boy Incident

Chelsea’s difficult night was compounded by an incident involving winger Pedro Neto late in stoppage time.

Frustrated during the closing moments, the Portugal international pushed a ball boy, knocking him onto a chair and triggering a brief confrontation between players from both teams.

Speaking after the match, Neto issued a heartfelt apology.

“I want to apologise to the ball boy. I have already spoken to him.”

“We were losing and in the emotion of the game I wanted to get the ball fast and I gave him a little push.”

“I’m not like this. It was in the heat of the moment and I want to apologise. I gave him my shirt. I’m really sorry about it, I feel I have to apologise to him.”

“My French is not very good, and [Portugal team-mate] Vitinha came over and said to him I was not like this.”

“At the end he [the ball boy] laughed and I gave him my shirt and said sorry about 35 times.”

“He could see what had happened and was happy with the situation.”

It remains unclear whether UEFA will take disciplinary action.

“The Last 15, 20 Minutes Were Crazy” – Rosenior

Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior admitted his side lost their composure late in the match.

“The last 15, 20 minutes were crazy in many aspects,” he said.

“That’s on me. I need to be better in moments , setbacks, mistakes happen, but you have to stay calm in the moment, me included.”

“And we didn’t, and we were punished by a very good team, which makes the scoreline a painful one because for 75 minutes we were in the tie and in the game.”

“It’s something we’ve spoken about from my first day coming in about reacting positively, about staying calm in pressure moments, and it’s not happened.”

“We won’t reach our potential and it’s my job to find the answer.”

All to Play for at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea can take encouragement from their performance for much of the match following their heavy defeat.

For around 75 minutes they matched the reigning champions stride for stride.

However, defensive lapses, ill-discipline and one costly goalkeeping error ultimately allowed PSG’s fearsome attacking unit to run riot.

Chelsea now face the daunting task of overturning a three-goal deficit when they host PSG in the decisive second leg at Stamford Bridge next Tuesday.

Before that, the Blues will return to Premier League action against Newcastle United, while PSG enjoy a week’s rest after their Ligue 1 fixture was postponed.
