Former Super Eagles defender, Bob Osim, has voiced strong criticism over the selection of Nigeria’s squad for the ongoing 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
His comments followed the Super Eagles’ 1-0 defeat to defending champions Senegal.
In a chat with Brila.net, Osim questioned the integrity of the selection process, insisting that the team does not reflect the true quality available in the NPFL.
“The truth of the matter is, it’s not all about the coach. It’s our system. Our system is poor,” Osim said.
“Interest again is another aspect. People put so much interest because they want their boys to be part of it so that they can sell, they can exploit.”
He argued that certain deserving players were overlooked due to internal politics and personal interests.
“There are players that did well in the league but didn’t get picked simply because they don’t have people pushing for them.”
The former Calabar Rovers player lamented that Nigeria did not field its best possible squad, stressing that merit was compromised in the final team list.
The home-based Super Eagles failed to deliver a convincing performance in their loss to Senegal on Tuesday.
They now face Sudan next Tuesday at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar in a match that could decide their CHAN survival.
