Opabunmi Applauds Golden Eaglets’ Progress Ahead of WAFU B Cup

Former Super Eagles, Femi Opabunmi has expressed delight at the steady progress of Nigeria’s U17 MNT, the Golden Eaglets.

The team is stepping up preparations for the upcoming U-17 WAFU B Cup, scheduled to be held in Ivory Coast next month.

Opabunmi was in attendance on Wednesday evening at the FIFA Goal Project in Abuja, where the Golden Eaglets recorded another commanding performance in a friendly match.

The team eased to a 4-0 victory over Port Harcourt-based Fanz Academy, continuing their impressive build-up under head coach Manu Garba.

Speaking to Brila.net after the encounter, Opabunmi praised the team’s overall quality but urged them to improve decision-making in the final third.

“I can see that they are trying their best,” he said. “The attacking force is there, but the finishing is still a little poor. The coach is experienced, and I know he will work on that.”

“The boys are very good in every department. I like the way the number 7 and number 11 move the ball, and the number 10 jersey impressed me with his composure in midfield. The last touch is always the problem, but overall, they are playing very well.”

The Golden Eaglets, five-time FIFA U-17 World Cup champions, will continue their series of test matches with another outing on Friday as part of their intensive preparations.

Nigeria will be aiming to improve on their third-place finish in the last WAFU B U-17 Championship as they prepare for the 2025 edition, scheduled for September.
