Onana Joins Super Eagles Striker Onuachu at Trabzonspor

Paul Onuachu has a new teammate at Trabzonspor in Cameroon international Andre Onana.

The Turkish club has completed the signing of Onana on a season-long loan until the end of the campaign.

Trabzonspor is set to pay the goalkeeper’s full salary of £6 million and also give him a signing bonus.

The 29-year-old was given a wonderful reception by a large crowd of supporters when he got to the Istanbul Airport, Turkey. Onana was reluctant to leave Manchester United, but had to go after the club signed Senne Lammens arrived from Royal Antwerp.

United confirmed the deal in an official statement which read:

“In his first season at United, Andre was part of the squad that lifted the Emirates FA Cup following a 2-1 victory over Manchester City at Wembley Stadium. Onana played 50 times in his second campaign and our no.24 has now agreed a loan move to Trabzonspor. The move has been completed ahead of the Turkish transfer window closing on Friday. We would like to wish Andre good luck.”

Onana’s time at United was marked with criticism from fans and media alike. He featured in 102 matches, conceding 150 goals, and won one major trophy.

The move to Trabzonspor provides the opportunity for him to get back to his level as a top goalkeeper, just as he did during his successful spells at Ajax and Inter Milan.

The transfer gives him an opportunity of consolidating the number one spot for Cameron as international tournaments are fast approaching.

African Cup of Nations set for December and world cup is next year, consistent playing time in Turkey could help Onana secure his compatriots trust for those tournaments.

Trabzonspor currently sits on 10 points from four league matches this season, the club has an ambition to secure qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

The addition of a goalkeeper like Onana who has a lot to prove, alongside Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu, is expected to strengthen their squad.
