Oliseh Predicts Lookman-Atletico Move Will Open Doors for More Nigerians

Former Super Eagles captain, Sunday Oliseh has praised Ademola Lookman’s transfer to Atletico Madrid, saying it could “just have saved Nigerian football.”

Oliseh highlighted that Atletico Madrid consistently competes in top competitions, describing the move as a major career upgrade for the 28 year old winger.

The former Super Eagles midfielder who also served as Coach, emphasized that it is fitting for a player of Lookman’s quality to join a top club.

“This transfer might just have saved Nigeria football, from my own experience from the trade,” Oliseh claims.

“Looking at it from this angle, Atletico Madrid plays Champions League football every year, the bonuses from Champions League are huge.

“The Spanish league pays well, you aren’t going there to earn poorly; the tax system is paying, the tax system aren’t huge, the cost of living in Spain is cheaper. This man will do well financially.

“If you’ve never played in a top club you won’t know the impact of playing in one. When you play in a top club, you become big, and that’s what Atletico Madrid is. This boy going there, he has just saved Nigerian football, in the sense that young players can now hope and dream of going to this top leagues.” Oliseh said.

Sunday Oliseh, who had a distinguished club career with Borussia Dortmund, Ajax, and Juventus, won domestic league titles in the Eredivisie and Bundesliga.

On the international stage, he lifted both the Africa Cup of Nations trophy and an Olympic gold medal with Nigeria.
