Super Falcons goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie has described her historic Ballon d’Or Yachine Trophy nomination as a difficult but inspiring journey, using the moment to encourage young girls across Africa to chase their dreams.
The 23-year-old Brighton FC shot-stopper, who became the first African female goalkeeper to receive a Ballon d’Or nomination, shared her journey from humble beginnings to football’s grandest stage.
She was nominated alongside;
- Ann-Katrin Berger (Germany & Gotham FC Women)
- Cata Coll (Spain & Barcelona Feminine)
- Hannah Hampton (England & Chelsea Women)
- Daphine Van Domselaar (Netherland & Arsenal Women)

“It’s Not Easy” – Chiamaka Nnadozie
Nnadozie opened up about the challenges she faced on her rise to global recognition, saying it was a path marked by hard work and determination.
“It’s kind of difficult coming from where we came from and being at the top. I mean, not yet at the top but being nominated for the Ballon d’Or, coming where we came from, nah, it’s not easy. It’s not easy.”
The Nigerian international has been a standout performer for both club and country, earning plaudits for her performances at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and in France’s Division 1 Féminine before her exit to join England club side, Brighton Women.
A Message for Africa Young Girls
For Chiamaka Nnadozie, the recognition is bigger than personal achievement but a victory for the continent.
“This for Africa, this is for every young girl dreaming to be a superstar. This is to encourage you, keep doing what you’re doing. Everything is going to be all right.”
Her words come at a time when African women’s football is gaining more visibility on the global stage, with players breaking barriers in Europe’s top leagues.
Beyond talent, Nnadozie noted the importance of discipline, integrity, and self-belief in the pursuit of dreams.
“Always do the right thing, even when nobody’s watching. And I hope one day, come on, the skies will be your starting point.”
Her Ballon d’Or nomination adds to an already impressive career, following the Super falcons victorious outing at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), having previously helped Nigeria win the 2018 WAFU Women’s Cup and the 2019 African Games, as well as starring at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Also nominated in the Balon d’Or award is the interim and WAFCON winning head coach, Justin Madugu in the Women’s Team Coach of the Year category.
The winners will be announced later in September in France.
