Nigeria’s Falconets Crowned WAFU Zone B U20 Champions

Nigeria’s U20 women’s national team, the Falconets, capped off a flawless performance at the 2025 WAFU Zone B U20 Girls’ Cup with a 1–0 victory over hosts Benin Republic on Tuesday at the Omnisport Stadium in Adjohoun.

A 16th-minute goal from Ramotalahi Kareem, sealed the win for coach Moses Aduku’s side, who finished the tournament unbeaten and without conceding a defeat.

Kareem Strikes Again as Falconets Fly High

The Falconets began the final match on the front foot, dictating the pace and maintaining control of possession.

Their pressure paid off early when Kareem latched onto a long pass, outpaced her marker, and calmly slotted past the goalkeeper to hand Nigeria a deserved lead and score her fourth of the tournament and the competition’s highest tally.

Nigeria were unable to extend their advantage after creating several more chances. Benin Republic tried to fight back in the second half, but the Falconets’ backline stood resolute and composed to close out a 1–0 victory.

The result confirmed Nigeria’s total dominance of the tournament, having won all four matches, scored 10 goals, and conceded just once.

Midfield maestro Kafayat Oluwatosin Mafisere was named Woman of the Match for her tireless display in midfield, dictating play and breaking up Benin’s rhythm.

Elsewhere, Ghanaian midfielder Sarah Nyarko earned the Best Player of the Tournament award after finishing with three goals and an assist.

Falconets Outclass Ghana Before Sealing Trophy

Earlier on Tuesday morning, the Falconets had already been declared the2025 WAFU Zone B U20 Girls’ Cup winner, with a 3–0 victory over Ghana’s Princesses, effectively securing the title before the final match.

Janet Akekoromowei, who was also on target in their earlier meeting, opened the scoring in the 17th minute before Alaba Olabiyi doubled the lead seven minutes later.

Nigeria remained in control throughout, with Kareem adding gloss to the scoreline to complete a dominant performance.

The win put Nigeria on nine points and a +8 goal difference after scoring three goals in each of their first three games, leaving Ghana second with six points following their victories over Benin.

Though the final fixture against Benin Republic was largely ceremonial, the Falconets approached it with professionalism and wrapped up the competition in style.

With this title, Nigeria confirmed their status as West Africa’s undisputed U20 powerhouse, as the Falconets continue preparations for future CAF and FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
