Nigerian strikers Akor Adams and Kelechi Iheanacho were on the scoresheet as Sevilla beat Schalke 04 in a thrilling friendly.
The goals drew a lot of cheers from Sevilla fans. It was Akor Adams’ first goal in a Sevilla shirt, and for Iheanacho, it marked a resurgence after spending last season on loan at EFL Championship side Middlesbrough.
Head coach Matías Almeyda deserves praise as he seems to be getting the best out of the Nigerian duo.
Adams joined Sevilla in January from Montpellier for a €5.5 million fee. A month later, he picked up a hamstring injury in training, which kept him out for 34 days, missing five games in the process.
He returned, then suffered another injury in April, this time a muscle issue, which sidelined him for the rest of the season.
The game against Schalke 04 was a testament to Adams’ determination. He looks more committed than ever, and with a season free of injury, he could be the best version of himself.
If Adams continues to perform like he did against Schalke, he will be a valuable addition to Eric Chelle’s FIFA World Cup qualifiers squad and could be one of the strikers leading Nigeria’s attack in the 2025 African Cup of Nations, which will take place in December.
Sevilla’s next friendly fixtures are against Marseille, Al Qadsia, and Toulouse, which will take place on August 2nd, August 4th, and August 10th, respectively.
Los Nervionenses’ first competitive match of the season will be on August 17th against Athletic Bilbao.
