National Sports Commission (NSC), Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko has revealed that strategic planning for the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff matches have since commenced.
Speaking on the efforts to secure qualification, Dikko emphasized treating each game as a final, with the ultimate goal of flying Nigeria’s flag at the World Cup.
“The first thing we did, immediately after we beat Benin Republic—that same night—we started having meetings with the players,” Dikko disclosed.
“Because we now have three games—likely two in Africa and one in the intercontinental playoffs—and every game is a final. So we have to focus. We are playing three finals: two finals in four days in Morocco next month, and one final in March.”

He outlined a comprehensive approach to player motivation and logistics, stressing the need to elevate incentives beyond previous standards.
“Satisfy the players; give them the best bonuses they can get. Forget the bonuses you used to give before—you have to pay them final-level bonuses. Provide all the logistics and keep everyone focused,” he said.

Dikko highlighted ongoing collaboration with the NFF, noting daily meetings and direct communication with players to maintain peak concentration.
“We are already meeting with the NFF every day, calling the players, and working together to ensure that everyone stays focused,” he added.
The NSC Chairman further expressed optimism, grounded in government and public support.
“I believe that with the support of Mr. President, Nigerians, and our players, we will deliver that World Cup ticket.”
The playoff campaign kicks off in Morocco this month, where Nigeria will face Gabon in one of the semi-finals.
DR Congo face Cameroon in the other game.
Nigeria’s qualification hopes now hinge on this playoff pathway after narrowly navigating a competitive African group stage.
